Andros Townsend

Palace midfielder could join Magpies this week

Sky Bet Championship table toppers Newcastle United could re-sign former midfielder Andros Townsend later this week if a deal can be struck with Crystal Palace according to the Chronicle Live.

The 25-year-old Leytonstone born wide man is thought to be available for transfer after failing to impress at Selhurst Park with The Eagles currently battling against relegation.

Townsend joined Palace on a five-year deal from Newcastle United in the summer after the South Londoners met a £13 million release clause in the player’s contract however it is now thought that the midfielder could be set for a return to Tyneside.

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is believed to want to bring Townsend back to St James’ Park on a loan deal although Crystal Palace would like to offload the player on a permanent basis. Spanish boss Benitez has been allocated transfer funds for the current transfer window and the two clubs will now try to thrash out a deal for the player this week according to reports.

Townsend joined Newcastle United 12 months ago from Tottenham Hotspur for a reported transfer fee of £12 million after falling out of favour at White Hart Lane. The midfielder scored four goals in 13 appearances for The Magpies but was unable to help the club fend off the threat of relegation and left the club in the summer.
