Leeds United manager rubbishes Wood and China rumours

As most of us probably thought, then instantly realised, the ‘rumours’ of Chris Wood supposedly interest Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian are wide of the mark.

A report a few days ago by ESPNFC linked United’s top-scorer Wood with the Chinese club after they had failed to secure the signing of Chelsea and Spain superstar striker Diego Costa.

Kiwi Wood is the driving force behind Leeds United’s drive up the table, scoring 16 goals so far this season to push Leeds to fourth in the Sky Bet Championship. With his goals in the bag, the Whites are within sniffing distance of the automatic promotion places.

In this report, ESPNFC said that Chinese Super League side, “Tianjin Quanjian have turned their attentions to Leeds United striker Chris Wood” as a replacement for missing out on Chelsea’s Diego Costa.

Alarm bells should start to ring when Wood is seen as a like-for-like replacement for Costa. Look, Chris Wood is not a bad striker, not by any means. But to compare him to Diego Costa as a Chinese transfer interest, nope I am not buying that one. Neither is Leeds United manager Garry Monk apparently.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds reporter Adam Pope (below) after yesterday’s 3-2 loss to Barnsley at Oakwell, Monk said exactly what he felt about the situation and the rumours.

Almost in derision, and with a modicum of scorn, Monk said: “I have no idea where that one`s come from. Speculation is speculation. There is no point in even talking about it.”
