Gianfranco Zola gives more details on Tomasz Kuszczak head injury

Birmingham City head coach Gianfranco Zola has told the Birmingham Mail that the head injury suffered by Tomasz Kuszczak isn’t believed to be too serious.

During today’s 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers, their number one goalkeeper seemed to suffer a knock to the head after catching the ball during a goal mouth scramble. He was able to play on until the end of the first half but had looked groggy after the incident, leading to concerns he may have suffered a concussion.

During the half time break it was decided that Kuszczak could not carry on and he was replaced by Adam Legzdins for the rest of the game, though the former Burton Albion man was rarely tested. With that head injury though, Birmingham fans may have been starting to fear they would have lost a key player for the next couple of weeks.

However in the post-match press conference, Zola has calmed fears by saying that the injury is minor and it’s not likely he will have to go under any sort of concussion protocol.

He said: “He got a knock on his head, he wasn’t seeing clear so we had to take him off.”

“It looked like he was OK, then when he came in he said that he was feeling dizzy and we had to change.”

“I don’t think there will be concussion protocols, I don’t think it will be necessary to do that. It was just that when he was moving he didn’t see clearly.”

Kuszczak will be hope to be back for next week’s match against Norwich City.
