Sheffield Wednesday: Boss down-hearted after Brighton defeat

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal was left disappointed after his side were left with nothing following a 2-1 defeat to ten-man Brighton.

The hosts took the lead from a swift counter attack which allowed Anthony Knockaert to round Kieren Westwood and rifle his shot home from close range.

Lewis Dunk levelled the scores as he headed past his own goalkeeper to give the visitors a lifeline.

Fernando Forestieri saw his spot-kick expertly saved by David Stockdale – after Glenn Murray was dismissed for deliberately handling Glenn Loovens’ shot – before his follow-up effort was also denied by the former Fulham ‘keeper.

Knockaert scored a late winner to seal all three points as he kept his composure to divert home Sebastien Pocognoli’s cross.

Steven Fletcher saw red late on for an off-the-ball incident before Sam Hutchinson quickly followed for a second yellow card.

Speaking afterwards, boss Carvalhal exclaimed his frustration at how his side conceded the points: “We must win this game.

“It was a case of some things we cannot control and some things that we must control.” he said.“We can’t control the missed penalty, because these things happen in football.

“But we must control the red cards, this is something that cannot happen.

“We did everything to win the game, just like we do against every team in this competition, we would not have been happy with a draw.

“The substitutions we made show how much we tried to win this game.

“The second half we played very well, but the circumstances with things in and out of our control meant we didn’t win the game.

“We wanted three points but unfortunately we didn’t achieve this.”
