Stoke City youngster loaned to Pirates

Sky Bet League One outfit Bristol Rovers have completed the signing of Stoke City defender Ryan Sweeney on a loan deal until the end of the season according to the Bristol Post.

The 19-year-old Kingston upon Thames born centre back joined Stoke City from AFC Wimbledon for a reported £250,000 transfer fee in the summer but the player is yet to feature for The Potters and will spend time at The Memorial Stadium gaining further first team playing experience.

Sweeney has spent the first half of the season playing for the Stoke City development squad but the player is in need of regular first team football to help him reach his Premier League dream.

The defender joins a Bristol Rovers side who are flying high in their first season back in Sky Bet League One. The Pirates are currently sitting in ninth position in the league table and could yet gatecrash the Play Off places.

Centre back Sweeney joined the AFC Wimbledon academy at just eight years of age and the player went on to make 13 appearances for The Dons at first team level.

Stoke City beat off competition from both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United to land the former Republic of Ireland Under-18 international in the summer and the player will now try to prove his quality during his temporary stint in the South West.
