Martin unlikely to return to derby

Derby boss Steve McClaren have admitted that the chances of recalling Chris Martin from Fulham are extremely slim. (As reported in the Derby Telegraph.)

Whilst the former England boss admitted he still wants him to return, the likelihood is that he’ll continue his loan spell at Fulham.

He originally joined The Cottagers on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window. McClaren’s predecessor Nigel Pearson decided that Martin wouldn’t, at the time, be part of his long-term plans.

Derby have already completed the signing of David Nugent this month. However, a recent injury has made him unavailable for selection at this present time.

Now McClaren, who is a fan of the forward, will have to do without him for the time being. Whilst he has openly admitted he’d like to have him back, Fulham are determined to keep hold of him.

“The situation is that we would like him back,” McClaren said. “it’s just not possible at the moment.

“There is no loan release clause and that means Fulham can keep hold of him. They are right to do so because he’s a damn good player and has proven it.

“There is still two weeks (of the transfer window) to go. Chris has to play for Fulham. However, it is January and that always gives us some hope.”

“I would like him back but unfortunately it’s out of my hands.”

In his most recent appearance against Barnsley, Martin both scored and claimed an assist in Fulham;’s 2-0 victory.

Another Ram’s target Henri Lansbury also looks to be on his way to Aston Villa.
