Why Villa Are So Keen On Securing Midfielder

It’s just not going away. Conor Hourihane and Aston Villa can’t be separated in the transfer columns at the moment and the deal makes complete sense from a Villa perspective. Sky Sports News have again reported that Steve Bruce is keen to sign the midfielder in the next couple of weeks and it’s not hard to see why.

Hourihane arrived at Barnsley as an unknown really, the selling club Plymouth Argyle the first club where he had made an impact. The 25-year-old has earned the captaincy at Oakwell and with just 6 months left on his current deal a host of clubs are interested in signing the midfielder.

At the front of the queue are Steve Bruce and Aston Villa, floating up and down in mid-table looking for some direction. For me Villa recruited terribly in the summer. Instead of clearing out the big names and bringing in some young and fresh talent they replaced outgoing players with big money signings.

Ross McCormack has been the biggest flop. At £12 million you would expect a striker to be scoring every week in the league. McCormack is only now getting a game because Jonathan Kodjia (£16 million) is on international duty. Hourihane is a talented and progressing player who, at £1 million could be the bargain of the window if Aston Villa can get a deal done in the next couple of weeks.

Technically very good with a cultured left foot and a controlled aggression which helps his side compete week-in, week-out in every game he is exactly what Steve Bruce needs in his team. Players with ego’s arrived in the summer to join some already inflated ones and Villa aren’t winning the battles before winning the game, a major issue at this level.

Roberto Di Matteo and Villa seemed to think they would be heading straight back up but it’s not that easy in the Football League as many teams find out. Villa’s fantastic support have seen their side keep in touch with the front-runners this season but in recent weeks drop back from the play-offs with the form of the top six almost flawless at times.

There is no reason why they can’t push all the way with the talent in the squad but maybe a signing such as Hourihane will bring some honest passion and desire as well as Championship quality to the party.

It seems inevitable that the Barnsley skipper will be leaving in this window, seeing his team-mate and talisman for the club Sam Winnall leave the club for so cheap and so easily must have been a blow to the midfielder and everyone’s money seems to be on him following out of the South Yorkshire club for pastures new. Villa would certainly have themselves a bargain and a very good footballer on their hands if they can get it done.
