Leeds United: Whites not Keane on Irish legend

Famed for his twin-pistol goal salute, Ireland’s Robbie Keane is a player who definitely deserves the tag of legend’.

Across his 20-year career, Keane has commanded over £88m in transfer fees since Coventry City paid his first club Wolves £7.65m for his services at the opening of the summer 1999 transfer window – Keane being only 18 at the time of signing.

A year later and he was signing for Italian giants Inter Milan for a fee of around £16.5m, spending a year in Italy before signing for Leeds for £15m. Further transfers to Tottenham from Leeds (£9m), from Tottenham to Liverpool (£20.5m) and then back to Tottenham six months later (£14.2m). He left English shores for Los Angeles Galaxy in 2011 for a fee of just over £3m.

However, having left MLS side LA Galaxy after his contract ran out, Keane found himself a free agent. However, despite his growing age, he finds himself being talked about by teams wanting to sign him on.

The striker the player who has scored 287 career goals in 636 appearances is a wanted man again, with Preston North End said by betting site Sky Bet, earlier this week, to be Evens favourites to sign him before 3rd September this year.

However, one club not in the hunt, according to the player himself, are Keane’s former club Leeds United. Speaking to Talksport, as per the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP), Keane says that where there is no expression of interest a club, there is no possibility of signing.

Keane, according to the YEP’s Phil Hay, told Talksport: “I’ve got a few offers on the table. I’ve had a lot of people asking ‘are you coming back to Leeds, Wolves etc’ but you can’t go somewhere where there isn’t an offer. I definitely haven’t heard from Leeds or Wolves.”

Keane completed one season at the Whites, but that looks like all it will be and that the Irish legend’s next steps will be elsewhere than Elland Road.
