Robins closing in on German keeper

Sky Bet Championship strugglers Bristol City are understood to be close to completing a deal for German goalkeeper Fabian Giefer according to the Bristol Post.

The Robins were first linked with a move for 26-year-old Adenau born stopper last week with the player currently starved of first team playing opportunities at the Veltins-Arena.

Giefer has made just three senior appearances for the German Bundesliga outfit in two-and-a-half years with The Royal Blues since joining the club from Fortuna Dusseldorf in summer 2014 and the player may now need to leave the club to further his career.

It has now been reported that under-fire Bristol City manager Lee Johnson is closing in on a deal for the keeper. Giefer is expected to move to Ashton Gate in the next few days on a loan deal until the end of the season. It is understood that The Robins will have the option to make the arrangement a permanent one in the summer.

Giefer is a product of the Bayer Leverkusen academy with the player graduating through the club’s youth and reserve teams to feature for the club at first team level. The player made eight senior appearances during his time at the BayArena. In 2011, Giefer suffered concussion resulting in the keeper losing his memory for over a month.

The following summer the player joined Fortuna Dusseldorf after turning down Bayern Munich in a bid for regular first team football. Geifer made 68 appearances for Flingeraner in two years with the club before spending a frustrating spell out of favour current club Schalke.
