Chesterfield: Spireites to unveil new boss tomorrow – not one named

Bookmakers have suspended the betting on who will be the next Chesterfield manager, with several sources including the BBC saying that ex-Middlesbrough and Coventry boss Tony Mowbray is to sign.

The above article, on the BBC Sport website, quotes a BBC Radio Sheffield report that 53-year-old Mowbray “will sign a deal with the League One strugglers in the next 24 hours.”

Mowbray’s last managerial appointment was with Coventry, who he left in September of last year with the Sky Blues struggling at the bottom of the table.

However, in a direct challenge to this, Peak FM commentator for Chesterfield, and Radio Yorkshire journalist, Joe Rawson refutes that it is Mowbray who is the incoming new Spireites boss – instead saying that it is ex-Wigan boss Gary Caldwell.

34-year-old Caldwell, who has a 40.8% win rate as a manager, has been out of the game since being let go by Wigan on October 25 last year. Caldwell managed the Latics for 71 games, returning an average of 1.52 points per game.

He took over at the DW Stadium at the beginning of April 2015, around six weeks after calling time on his playing career, the last five years of which had been with Wigan.

Chesterfield are currently in 22nd place in the Sky Bet League One, the final relegation place, and are level on points with Shrewsbury and Bury but with a -3 goal difference worse than the Shrews.

The Spireites entertain mid-table AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, where Caldwell, if he is to be installed as the Chesterfield manager, will be wanting to oversee a welcome three points.

Others saying it is Caldwell over Mowbray

This BBC Sheffield Sports Editor says that both Mowbray and Caldwell are still in the frame, alongside a secret 3rd candidate.
