Birmingham City to make move for Swansea City veteran

Birmingham City are set to make a move for Swansea City’s Wayne Routledge according to a report from the Birmingham Mail.

It is no secret that the Blues have more money than usual to play with during this transfer window following the takeover by Trillion Trophy Asia earlier in the season and new head coach Gianfranco Zola is planning to spend it to make sure that they get into the play-off spots this season.

However since Zola was appointed, a new problem has emerged at St Andrews. With Jacques Maghoma currently away from the club and playing for the Democratic Republic of Congo at the African Cup of Nations and Greg Stewart being ruled out for a few weeks, Birmingham suddenly have a lack of wingers and will need to recruit a new one if they don’t want a hole in their side.

And while he has played plenty of times this season, the player Birmingham have targeted as their new winger is Wayne Routledge. He has made 20 appearances for the Swans this season as they battle against relegation from the Premier League but with him being aged 32-years-old, their new head coach Paul Clement may look to cash in now so they don’t end up having a veteran player on the books that they may not be able to use in the coming years.

What is interesting is that Routledge has played in Birmingham before – just for the Blues’ fierce rivals Aston Villa. He did only spend a year at the club before leaving, so there won’t be much bad blood there especially if he can come to Birmingham and impress for them.
