Blues interested in Derby County forward

Birmingham City manager Gianfranco Zola is thought to be weighing up a move for Derby County forward Johnny Russell according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 26-year-old Glasgow born frontman has attracted attention from clubs both in England and overseas in recent weeks and it is now believed that Birmingham City are also tracking the player.

Russell has been linked with The Blues’ Sky Bet Championship rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, Bristol City, Wolves, QPR and Cardiff City over the past few weeks while French clubs Toulouse and Montpellier are also thought to have watched the striker in action.

Birmingham City are winless in their last six matches in all competitions and new manager Gianfranco Zola is well aware of the club’s need to rediscover their winning habit. A goalless draw with struggling Nottingham Forest on Saturday did little to improve the mood around St Andrews and Blues boss Zola has identified Rams forward Russell as a player who could help improve his side.

Russell joined Derby County in summer 2013 for a transfer fee of £750,000 from then Scottish Premiership club Dundee United and the player has gone on to score 28 goals in 160 appearances during his time at Pride Park.

Birmingham City were also linked with a move for Russell in the summer with former boss Gary Rowett also an admirer of the player.
