Sheffield United sign Burnley left-back

Sheffield United have completed their second permanent signing of the month in Burnley defender Danny Lafferty, as confirmed on the club website.

The 27-year-old left-back arrived at Bramall Lane in August on loan and instantly became a regular in Chris Wilder’s starting eleven. The Northern Ireland international has accumulated 22 appearances for the Blades, starting all 22.

The United boss was pleased to have completed the deal, “Dan has been brilliant for us and he is another who has played a big part in helping us get to where we are now.

“He is an international footballer who has played the majority of his football in this country in the Championship and he has proved himself to be a dependable performer. Dan has been part of the success Burnley have enjoyed over recent times and I’m delighted and thankful to our Board for their continued backing.”

The defender has been given a more advanced role under the league-leaders in Wilder’s system of three centre-backs complimented with two wing-backs. The former Millers loanee has seen his attacking attributes tested and bagged a goal in a 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town.

Lafferty joins the League One outfit on a two-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The announcement comes shortly after the news that midfielder James Wallace has seen his contract with the Blades cancelled by mutual consent. The Everton academy product was in his third season with Sheffield United but has seen his career at Bramall Lane ruined by injuries.

The South Yorkshire club face a trip to Walsall tomorrow.
