Burnley defender passes Sheffield United medical

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has confirmed Burnley defender Danny Lafferty has passed his medical at the Blades.

The 27-year-old signed for the South Yorkshire club on loan in August and quickly cemented his place in the League One leaders’ starting eleven. Lafferty has made 22 appearances for Sheffield United, starting every game, and has lost just one fixture since arriving at Bramall Lane. He also bagged a goal in a 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town.

It is now reported by BBC Sheffield’s Andy Giddings that the left-back has passed a medical and is expected to complete a permanent move to S2.

Lafferty has been given a more advanced role in Wilder’s new system of three centre-backs and two wing-backs, allowing the defender to test his attacking abilities. The loanee will bring a huge wealth of experience to the Blades dressing room and will add over 50 Championship appearances to the team, which will hopefully come in handy next season.

Wilder has also confirmed that youngsters Louis Reed and George Long, who have found game-time extremely limited this campaign, will both be staying with the club. The Sheffield-born boss considers them “part of the squad.”

Sheffield United are now hunting a forward and a right-sided defender, as a replacement for Reece Brown, as confirmed by Wilder to Andy Giddings. The Blades have also been linked with a loan move for Manchester United youngster Joe Riley as a replacement for the injured Harry Chapman.

Lafferty’s club face a trip to Walsall on Saturday and will look to extend their lead at the top of League One.
