Southend United striker faces potential prison spell

Sky Bet League One side Southend United could face a spell without Nile Ranger, as the striker pleaded guilty to fraud.

The 25-year-old striker pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud by obtaining bank details and transferring the money.

The United front-man denied a second count of money laundering at Wood Green Crown Court earlier today, with the footballer’s last serious conviction coming 10 years ago.

The court heard how Ranger conspired to use the bank details of Diane Bloss to move £2,090 from one account to another after defrauding a women in February 2015.

Ranger will be sentenced after his accomplaces, Rean Morgan and Aseany Duncan, are trialed on 24th April.

A statement from Southend United read: “This misdemeanour occurred two years ago and therefore a long time before Nile Ranger joined the Club.

“We understand that Nile was in a very dark place at the time with many people, including the football industry, turning their back on Nile.
“The Club will never condone such behaviour and had Nile been a Southend United player at the time, then there would have been no hesitation in terminating the player’s contract.
“Since Nile joined the Club last July we have worked closely with him to rehabilitate his old ways and will continue this work for the good of the player from which the Club will hopefully also be rewarded. We can only speak as we find and Nile, with our support, has responded well.”
Southend United will hope to move past this when they face Rochdale at the weekend.
