Aston Villa are set to make an offer for Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane according to a report from HITC Sport.
The Villains have been in the transfer columns a lot during this transfer window as recently appointed head coach Steve Bruce looks to shape the squad in his image ahead of a push to get into the Sky Bet play-offs. The man that had been attracting this attention in news stories up until now was Nottingham Forest’s Henri Lansbury, who could be set to complete a move to Aston Villa soon. But this report suggests that he isn’t the only midfielder that they have been looking at.
The West Midlands club have also been scouting Hourihane, with Bruce attending Barnsley’s 0-0 draw with Blackpool in the FA Cup Third Round at the weekend and are close to making a bid. This report suggests that Bruce is going to take one more look at the player this weekend, when Barnsley will be travelling to Fulham to face them, before deciding whether or not he is going to make a move for the player.
Hourihane has been attracting plenty of attention because despite making the jump up to the Sky Bet Championship for the first time after the Tykes were promoted last season, he has been performing above expectations as Barnsley have surprisingly been challenging for a play-off spot. But while the South Yorkshire club would want to keep Hourihane, the same tricky contract situation which will see Lansbury depart Aston Villa also affects them. His current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and Barnsley will have to make the decision whether they want to cash in or take the risk he will sign a new deal before the end of the season.
