The Sheffield Star have revealed that Sheffield United are all but certain to confirm the signing of Joe Riley on loan from Manchester United. The versatile 20-year-old is currently receiving treatment for a hamstring injury but this won’t stop the temporary move from going ahead.
After Reece Brown left the club after manager Chris Wilder decided against extending his short term contract, many now suggest Riley will come into the club to fill that void. The Bramall Lane club have been an admirer of Riley for some time now and Wilder looks set to get his man. Ever since the injury to Harry Chapman, cutting short his loan move from Middlesbrough, the former Northampton Town manager has identified Riley as a transfer priority.
Riley is most comfortable in midfield but he can also do a job in the right back position as well. The player is believed to be extremely interested in the move and is excited about the prospect of joining the Sky Bet League One title favourites. Wilder has recently brushed aside any transfer talk surrounding Riley but did not rule out the prospect of him joining following their away win at Southend United.
Riley has made just two appearances at Old Trafford in the first team, both coming last season under then-manager Louis van Gaal. In February 2016, he appeared in the 3-0 away victory over Shrewsbury Town in the Emirates FA Cup, and three days later he took part in the 5-1 home victory over Danish side FC Midtylland in the UEFA Europa League.
