Sheffield Wednesday fans react to crashing out of the FA Cup

No one expected Sheffield Wednesday to go to the FA Cup Final and win it all, not even their most die hard of fans.

But many fans would like a good cup run, a couple of upsets, something that would make the rest of the season a bit more exciting. There’s nothing like getting far in a cup competition and considering the FA Cup is regarded as one of the greatest trophies in the world, according to the marketing anyway, getting far in that must be the best.

But from the moment the draw was made, Wednesday fans knew that progress was unlikely. They were given an unfashionable away trip to Middlesbrough and no offence to the Teessiders, but it is one of the worst draws you can get. A solid team that usually goes about it’s business well, an unfashionable side meaning you are unlikely to get much press attention and it is away from home so you don’t even get a cheap game out of.

And so the game went as you’d expect. While it was goalless in the first half, Middlesbrough would go on to take the lead through Grant Leadbitter. Daniel Ayala was sent off just a minute later which gave Wednesday hope but then Alvaro Negredo and Martin de Roon scored and that was that. The Boro went into the hat for the Fourth Round, and Wednesday’s attempts in the cup came to an end for another season.

There was a mixture of responses with most condemning the performance but some being happy that the distraction of the cup was gone. However the story could be that some are starting to doubt Carlos Carvalhal.
