Cleverley has been heavily linked with a move to fellow Championship side, Newcastle since the beginning of the transfer window but, as of yet, failed to reach an agreement with Everton for his services.
He spent the 2014/15, one of many successive struggles for Villa, on loan from Manchester United. Whilst on the books of The Villans, he notched up three goals in 37 appearances, before rejecting a permanent move to the club. From there, he made the move to Goodison Park.
He made a decent impression under former and current Belgium boss Roberto Martinez but has found first-team opportunities difficult to come by under Ronald Koeman. He, so far, featured in just 10 appearances this season. This includes just two appearances in the last nine games.
As well as league challengers, Newcastle, several clubs have been alerted to his potential availability. There is said to be high interest in both the Premier League and The Championship, which is only like to rise the longer the transfer window continues.
However, signing Cleverley could prove a real spark for Villa, who have been on the lookout for a midfielder to improve their ability in the middle of the pitch.
He is one of just a number of potential attacking midfielders that may enter the club in the coming weeks. Rumours that Henri Lansbury could be joining the club in the near future continue to circulate – as does the interest in Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane.
