Incoming transfer could pave way for Leeds to complete Premier League forward signing

West Ham United’s pursuit of Brentford striker Scott Hogan could pave the way for Leeds United to complete the signing of Ashley Fletcher.

Reports emerged this morning that the Hammers will look to complete a £12.5 million bid for the Championship striker.

24-year-old Hogan has scored 14 goals in 25 league appearances this season. Glenn Murray and Dwight Gayle are the only strikers in the second tier to boast a better record so far during this campaign.

Speaking about the striker, Brentford boss Dean Smith discussed the speculation linking Hogan with a move away by saying “He’ll be in a marketplace and the market tells you the value of it. The market has set its stall as to the price. I think his goals record puts him into a bracket.

“He takes each day as it comes as, against Cardiff, he felt he should have scored. He isn’t being distracted and is very much looking forward to taking on Norwich and getting chances and scoring them.”

Even with Hogan’s goals, Brentford currently sit in 14th place in the Sky Bet Championship table, securing 33 points in 25 games, with nine wins and six draws.

Recent reports suggest that Leeds could move for Fletcher in a £1.5 million deal during this January’s transfer window.

Despite being linked with a move to Elland Road, Fletcher featured in Friday night’s FA Cup clash against Manchester City. West Ham crashed out of the competition at the first hurdle in a 5-0 defeat against the Premier League giants.

The 21-year-old was a target for The Whites in the summer, but instead made the move to West Ham from Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Fletcher has featured in 11 Premier League games so far this season but failed to find the net. His only goal has come in the 4-1 EFL Cup defeat to his former club Manchester United.

The forward has had better luck playing in Premier League 2, scoring two and assisting another in four appearances in the reserve competition.

The West Yorkshire club currently sit in 5th place in the Sky Bet Championship table. They next face in-form Cambridge United in the FA Cup this weekend.
