Magpies striker linked with Cobblers return

Sky Bet League One outfit Northampton Town are reported to be on the verge of bringing former striker Ivan Toney back to the club on a loan deal from Newcastle United according to the Chronicle Live.

The 20-year-old forward has returned to St James’ Park after spending the first half of the campaign on loan at Shrewsbury Town where the player netted seven goals in 25 appearances in all competitions.

It has been reported that Toney is expected to join another club on loan during the transfer window and it is now believed that former club Northampton Town have submitted an offer to loan the youngster until the end of the season.

The Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas has revealed that Northampton Town have made an approach to secure a return to Sixfields for the former favourite and the club are now waiting to hear back from both Newcastle United and the player.

The Magpies signed Toney from Northampton Town in August 2015 after the youngster had bagged 13 goals in 60 appearances for The Cobblers following a successful jump from the academy to the first team at Sixfields. The player has made four appearances for Newcastle United to date and is yet to score his first goal for the club.

Northampton Town have enjoyed a solid season to date on their return to Sky Bet League One however the signing of another goalscorer may ensure that The Cobblers avoid any dip in form which could see the club slip into a relegation battle.
