According to reports from The Sun, England have been in contact with Peterborough United in an attempt to get their star midfielder Leonardo Da Silva Lopes to switch his allegiances.
Da Silva Lopes is expected to represent his homeland Portugal in the future, but would be available for England having moved to the country aged 12.
He was scouted playing in a local league by Peterborough United and has been at the club ever since.
And Director of Football at the Posh Barry Fry hasn’t hesitated to build up the 18 year old midfielder.
Speaking in an interview with the Mail Online, Fry said: “He’s got everything. He can head, he can tackle, the weight of his pass is brilliant, right foot and left foot and he’s played nearly 30 games this season.
“He’s the best player I’ve seen since Bestie came to United. Everybody in the country is after him. I’ve already had England on to say can he get a British passport because they want to pick him for England. Dan Ashworth advised us how to get it because he wants to pick him.”
At first, Posh were unable to deal with this request, as Da Silva Lopes was not 18.
The midfielder has since turned 18, and Fry confirmed that Posh had submitted a request for a British passport.
Perhaps the biggest compliment of all was the comparison to the late George Best.
Barry Fry stated that he hadn’t seen a kid as talented at this age since he saw George Best at Man United.
