Bury have signed Reece Brown following his release from Sheffield United.

The 25-year-old was released by the Shakers at the end of last season after spending the full season at Gigg Lane, making an impressive 35 appearances in his single campaign. The defender then joined Sheffield United in September on a short term deal last year following a successful trial.

Brown was mainly used as cover whilst at Bramall Lane due to injuries and uncertainty in defence. With the formidable form of fan-favourite Ethan Ebanks-Landell and the commanding Jake Wright, Brown made just five appearances at the Blades with two of those being League One games. Nevertheless, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder thanked the Manchester United academy product for his efforts, “Reece came in on a short term basis and provided cover for a number of positions. We thank him for his contribution and wish him well for the future.”

The decision to not extend Brown’s contract may hint at the possibility of an extended stay for centre-back Ebanks-Landell who is on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers with Championship club having the option to recall this month.

Bury and Sheffield United both met at Gigg Lane on Monday as the League One leaders came out as winners in a 3-1 victory. Reece Brown was an unused substitute, which was a recurring event at United, and must now swap a promotion battle for a relegation scrap with the Shakers sitting in 20th and above the relegation zone on goal difference alone. Brown could make his second debut in tomorrow’s fixture with promotion candidates Scunthorpe United.

Here is how Twitter reacted to this signing, with both Bury and Sheffield United fans seeming to be happy.
