Transfer news: Birmingham launch enquiry for former midfielder

Birmingham City have launched an enquiry to check on the availability of their former midfielder, Craig Gardner. The Birmingham Mail reports.

Gardner, who currently plays for West Bromwich Albion, has also represented Aston Villa – has fallen out of favour at the Hawthorns as the season has progressed.

A well known Blues fan, Gardner, is said to be open to the prospect of a return to St Andrew’s. His match fitness may be an issue, however, as He has only made three appearances since the middle of October for The Baggies.

The Blues are yet to win since the appointment of Gianfranco Zola last month, who took charge after the unexpected sacking of Gary Rowett. Having lost 3-1 at home to Brentford on Monday (2nd), they sit 13th. One place behind fierce rivals, Aston Villa.

The signing of Gardner may prove to be a boost during this gloomy period for the Blues. A player who won the League Cup with them back in 2011 – Gardner scored 11 times in 53 appearances during his first spell at St Andrew’s.

It is said that his style fits the one Zola is looking for in this transfer window. The Italian has made it clear that he is looking to add experience. At 30, Gardner certainly fits that bill.

The drawback, for both Zola and Gardner, will be Albion’s stance. The current Premier League side are said to only be prepared to let him go if they are able to sign a replacement.

The move would seem to be in the midfielders interests and it seems like he will have to play a waiting game before his future is decided.
