5 things we learned about League 1 this weekend

Sheffield United need a striker to get out of League 1

Blades fans learned this the day that they lost Nick Blackman to Reading. Blackman looked like the man to replace Ched Evans last season, but the void he left when moving to The Royals in January has never been filled. Sean Miller looked like the best option shortly after, but a long term injury meant United would have to look elsewhere. With 6 0-0 draws at Bramall Lane last season, goals were clearly the problem and with just 5 in total this season, David Weir has by no means cured it. United lie 17th in League 1.

Notts County are relegation candidates

Well, on this form they are. Chris Kiwomya’s men would have no doubt been thinking about sneaking into the play-offs come the end of the season, but five games in, the Magpies have the worst record in League 1. With a grand total of five goals in five games taking just one point in total, the ever-optimistic Kiwomya may start sweating over his position.  County’s latest scalp came courtesy of newly-promoted Rotherham who won 1-0 at Meadow Lane on Saturday.

Leigh Griffiths can dance too

Port Vale vs Wolves saw two of the league’s ‘bad boys’ go head to head in what was always going to be (forgive the cliche), a hotly contested derby in League 1. It must be noted, that Griffiths’ past is nowhere near as chequred to that of Hughes, but the eyes were always going to be on both players. The reliance on them to get goals for their club can not be underestimated. On this occasion it was Griffiths who won the scoring battle in a 3-1 victory for Wolves. His celebratory dance, a flailed-arm jiggle, copied Hughes’ signature move in a moment that delighted the travelling support at Vale Park. Hughes is a loathed figure at Molineux but he certainly didn’t have the last laugh here.

Gary Alexander is actually Marco van Basten

Ok, maybe not. But his sumptuous volley against Peterborough was somewhat similar to MvB’s wonder-goal in the ’88 Euro Final. Alexander peeled off of his man on the right-hand side and connected with Nicky Adams’ deep cross. The hit may not have been quite as special as van Basten’s, but it was enough to draw parallel conclusions. His second of the game, a lovely touch and left-foot finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the box wouldn’t have look out of place in Marco’s 101 goals compilation either!

Don’t back Swindon for Both Teams To Score

Having played 7 matches in all competitions this season in League 1, only one of those has resulted in both teams scoring in the match. Mark Robins’ young squad have been a little hit and miss this campaign, but whether it’s scoring or conceding, the two don’t seem to be in tandem. We at The72 are by no means tipsters, but if we could recommend one thing, it’d be to leave them out of your BTTS accumulators.
