Newcastle United: Magpies recall ‘star’ on loan at Bolton

Rafa Benitez has confirmed that Newcastle United have recalled Sammy Ameobi from his loan spell at Bolton Wanderers.

The Trotters were wanting to sign the 24-year-old permanently a few weeks ago but with no deal agreed upon and, with Mo Diame plus Christian Atsu playing in the 2017 African Cup of Nations, Ameobi has been recalled to bolster Newcastle’s reinforcements.

The winger has been an important player for Bolton and has accumulated 24 appearances for the League One club, with four goals to his name.

Newcastle boss Benitez said, “He has done well with Bolton. He is a player that can play in the wide areas.

“We’ll bring him back and see if he is fine and can give us something. We have players going to the African Cup of Nations.

“We have to be sure we have some players. If he’d doing well why not?

“It depends on him if he can stay here or not. It depends how much he can give to us.”

Ameobi, who has represented both England and Nigeria at youth international level, made his Magpies debut aged 19 in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He has played 67 times for the club he progressed through the academy with and has scored four goals. His last appearance for the Tyneside club was just over a year and a half ago, in a Premier League loss to Queen’s Park Rangers.

The former Cardiff City loanee will be a big miss for Bolton. The Greater Manchester club are currently flying high in League One in second spot and are just three points behind league-leaders Sheffield United. Amoeba played his last game today in a 2-2 draw with Coventry City.
