Premier League move for Aston Villa striker to be completed this week

The Daily Mail reports that Middlesbrough expect to confirm the signing of Aston Villa striker Rudy Gestede in time for him to play in their FA Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday. A £6million fee has all but been agreed and personal terms appear to be a formality for the Benin international.

West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace therefore look set to miss out in their quest to sign the former Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City target man, with Aitor Karanka winning the battle to bolster his forward line options. The majority of Gestede’s appearances for Villa this season have come as a substitute, where he has helped himself to four goals.

With Gestede making the move back to the Premier League, where he was relegated from with Villa last season, the likes of David Nugent and Jordan Rhodes could soon find themselves back in the English second tier, where they are regarded at proven goalscorers at that level. Steve Bruce recently stated that there had been a move from a Premier League club to discuss a move with Gestede, and a deal to take the player to the Riverside Stadium now looks all but a formality.

Financially, the Championship side look set to recoup the very fee that the paid to sign the Benin forward from Blackburn Rovers in 2015, where he has a regular goalscorer. Boro chairman Steve Gibson has acted quickly to try and get the deal through as quickly as possible to help Karanka in their quest to try and score more goals, which has ultimately been their Achilles heal this season so far.
