Sheffield United monitor Manchester United winger

Manchester United youngster Joe Riley is a possible January loan signing for Sheffield United, according to the Sheffield Star.

The 20-year-old will be relatively unknown to many but it seems that Chris Wilder is keeping tabs on Riley. He joined the Red Devils initially as a midfielder before being converted into a left-back for the under-21 team.

Riley was first included in a senior match day squad last season as an unused substitute in a Europa League round of 32. He made his professional debut four days later as he replaced Cameron Borthwick-Jackson at half-time in a 3-0 FA Cup victory against Shrewsbury Town. Chris Smalling, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingaard were all on target in Riley’s Manchester United debut.

The Blackpool-born youngster made his second and most recent appearance for the Manchester club in last season’s Europa League second leg 5-1 win over then-Danish champions, FC Midtjylland. Riley started the game  due to Chris Smalling’s injury and played 80 minutes in front of 60,000 people on his full debut at Old Trafford.

The left-sided Riley may provide competition to Daniel Lafferty for a place in the starting eleven or he may play a similar role to Harry Chapman and replace the injured youngster’s influence. Fellow midfielder Ben Whiteman went on loan yesterday which may pave way for Riley to join.

Joe Riley will swap Jose Mourinho for Chris Wilder and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Matt Done but with the Blades top of League One and the atmosphere at Bramall Lane electric, there is no better place for a potential superstar to learn his trade and make his name.
