Young Manchester United stopper enjoys Grimsby debut

England under-20 goalkeeper Dean Henderson has told Peak Elite of his desire to make more first team appearances after making his Grimsby Town debut in the Boxing Day win over Accrington Stanley.

The 19-year-old was preferred to long-serving Mariners’ stopper James McKeown for the 2-0 win over Stanley and is hopeful of extending his stay at Blundell Park, should he be given more opportunities in the starting XI.

He said: “I may only be young with a lot of time ahead of me but I want to play. That’s what a goalkeeper trains all week for. Now I’ve had my first taste it has me wanting more!”

And the teen caught the eye with several excellent saves as the Mariners kept their first clean sheet since mid-November.

He continued: “I was fairly busy with regards to making saves and I felt I did well with taking crosses.

“Accrington are a decent side to be fair so can’t argue with a win and clean sheet.”

Mariners’ boss Marcus Bignot was equally impressed with his debutante’s performance.

He added: “I think we were due a clean sheet but to be fair, there was a moment – and you look at moments because I look at keeper’s concentration levels because to be fair, he didn’t have particularly much to do – but there was a moment second half where they had a shot and his reaction with his legs was superb.

”So he’ll be really pleased with his performance but like I said, overall, we were due a clean sheet.”

Henderson will be hoping to keep his place between the sticks for the Mariners as they entertain Blackpool in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday 31 December.
