Championship trio eye up move for highly-rated Scottish centre back

The Scottish Sun reports that a trio of Championship clubs are in the hunt for Motherwell centre back Ben Heneghan. The 23-year-old rejected the chance to move to the English Football League last summer, electing to move up to Scotland after leaving National League side Chester.

Although Heneghan remains under contract at Fir Park but could be tempted by a move back to the south of the border. Barnsley, Brentford and Wigan Athletic are all understandable keen on making their move for the highly-regarded defender, who has become a key member of Mark McGhee’s squad with the Ladbrokes Premiership club.

League One outfit Charlton Athletic are also believed to be keen on the player as well. Last summer, clubs such as Brighton & Hove Albion, Blackburn Rovers and MK Dons all expressed their desire to sign the player but he elected to make the move to Well, stating that the fact he already knew some of the players at the club made it a more attractive proposition for him and his family.

The Manchester-born defender has become a permanent fixture at the heart of the defence alongside former Celtic and Middlesbrough man Stephen McManus. He came through the ranks with Premier League side Everton, failing to make a first-team appearance at Goodison Park. His deal with Motherwell expires in June 2018, so Motherwell are under no pressure to sell unless they receive an offer too good to refuse.
