Reading chasing signature of non-league star

Reading are chasing the signature of Aldershot Town’s Idris Kanu according to a report from the Reading Chronicle.

The 17-year-old came through the Manchester United academy but ended up being released from there and signed for Aldershot in October. Since then though Reading, a number of other unnamed Sky Bet Championship clubs, have been scouting Kanu and they could make a move for him in the upcoming January transfer window.

Most notably Reading scouts were watching as Aldershot took on Boreham Wood and that will have helped persuade them that they should be going for Kanu when they can. He scored a great individual goal as the Shots ran out as 2-0 winners in the tie and will have given scouts belief he may be able to replicate that in the EFL in the future.

However it may be tough to try and lure Kanu away from Aldershot. Their head coach Gary Waddock would be very disappointed to lose a forward they only signed a few months ago and will be aiming to tell him that his development will be helped by staying with Aldershot for a bit longer rather than joining another youth side. Kanu has had bad experiences with youth sides having been released by West Ham United aged 16 and then a year later he was let go of by Manchester United and may not want to go through that sort of system again.

While the scouts continue to watch Kanu, Reading will hope to win their next game against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
