REPORT: Wimbledon owe thanks to Leeds old boys following Cup comeback

Sky Bet League One side AFC Wimbledon looked to be down and out of the Emirates FA Cup until the 81st minute, when four goals in ten minutes dramatically booked their place in the Third Round Proper.

Curzon Ashton’s Adam Morgan scored after just 20 seconds to put the Vanarama National League North ahead, before putting the hosts 2-0 ahead on 21 minutes when he bundled his header over the line from close range.

The former Liverpool player – who was borrowing Adam Flanagan’s boots – completed his hat-trick with a neat finish 62 minutes.

Then stepped up the former Leeds players.

Tom Elliott began the comeback for the London side when he made full advantage of Hakan Burton’s failed clearance and smashed home from six yards out on 81 minutes. Elliott joined Wimbledon in 2015 but was part of a strong development surge from the Leeds United ACadeny, however he was unable to cement his place in the first team and made only three appearances for the Whites.

Dominic Poleon, another product of the Leeds United academy, scored Wimbledon’s second with a carbon copy of Elliott’s goal when Hakan, yet again, failed to clear a corner.

Poleon made more of an impact within the Leeds squad, making 29 appearances and scoring three times during his time at Elland Road. However his time in Yorkshire was ended, after two unsuccessful loan spells, in September 2014 when he made the move to Oldham Athletic.

Tyrone Barnett levelled the scoreline a minute after Poleon’s goal with a quality header into the bottom corner.

Eliott sent the Wimbledon fans into hysteria with the winner – and his second of the afternoon – on the final kick of the game to secure the Dons’ place in the Third Round proper.
