Hearts set to appoint Magpies coach

Managerless Scottish Premiership club Hearts are on the verge of appointing Newcastle United coach Ian Cathro as their new boss according to the Daily Record.

The 30 year old Dundee born coach was one of the first names linked to the vacancy after former manager Robbie Neilson left Tynecastle to join SkyBet League One club MK Dons last week.

It has been reported that The Jambos opened talks with Cathro on Saturday about becoming their new boss and those initial discussions are thought to have gone well with the Edinburgh based club believed to be hoping to be in a position to unveil Cathro within the next 48 hours. Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has given the move his blessing with Cathro desperate to take on a managerial role after working as an assistant with The Magpies and for European clubs Rio Ave and Valencia.

Cathro has a strong relationship with Hearts director of football Craig Levein with the coach having worked under the former Scotland manager during a previous role at Dundee United. Since leaving Tannadice, the pair have remained in contact and could now be reunited at Tynecastle.

After suffering financial problems which resulted in a stint in the Scottish Championship, Hearts have seen their reputation rebuilt over the past couple of years and Cathro will have the luxury of taking charge of a club which is currently occupying a Europa League qualification spot in the Scottish Premier League table.
