Championship clubs in race to sign Plymouth starlet

Several Sky Bet Championship clubs are tracking Plymouth Argyle’s Ben Purrington according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The 20-year-old defender is a hot prospect for the Pilgrims and has been a regular for them in a while. In recent weeks his performances have gone to another level as he won the PFA Fans Player of the Month in October and while he has been forced to miss a few games due to an hamstring injury, there are still plenty of teams interested in signing him in the upcoming January transfer window.

Following the likes of Premier League sides such as Crystal Palace and Stoke City being interested in Purrington last season, now a whole host of Championship sides are set to chase his signature. Barnsley, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday are all interested in the defender as they see him as not only someone who can add to the squad now but be a great player for them going into the future.

The issue that Plymouth have going into the transfer window is that Purrington’s contract is set to expire in the summer. While there is no indication that the defender would refuse a new deal just yet, he may end up being tempted by the big name clubs that are looking to sign him and might aim to force a move. Plymouth would not lose the defender on a free transfer due to his age, but they won’t want his fee to be decided by a tribunal which could see them only getting a minimal amount.
