Jason Steele praises hard work of Blackburn defence

Blackburn Rovers’ Jason Steele has told the Lancashire Telegraph that he believes the hard work of his defence helped grind out the win against Newcastle United.

The Lancashire side’s defence had struggled during the season and had been one of the reasons they have been at the wrong end of the Sky Bet Championship for most of the season. However in recent weeks they have started to improve and had their best display of the season at St James Park on Saturday.

Newcastle came into this game as the most in-form team in the league after winning nine games in a row and another victory would see them break their record for most wins in a row. However despite being free scoring in previous weeks they couldn’t breach the Blackburn defence and it took a solitary goal from Charlie Mulgrew to give Rovers a shock win.

And Steele has said the reason their defence has improved so much is because they are working hard as a team to make sure they are tough to beat. He said: “It was important. We haven’t had enough clean sheets this season, I’ll be the first to say that, but we’ve got to take a collective responsibility for that.”

“It’s not just down to the centre halves and the goalkeeper, it’s about the whole team, we win and lose together.”

“Don’t get me wrong there were times when we were under the cosh but I felt we thoroughly deserved the win.”

“To a man I thought everyone stood up, worked really hard, and I thought we looked a threat as well and could have had more goals.”

“Hopefully we can keep this little run going now.”
