Karl Robinson returns to football in League One role

Charlton Athletic have today announced the appointment of Karl Robinson as their new manager. The former MK Dons boss has penned a two-and-a-half year contract at The Valley, where he’ll officially start his new role with the Addicks from Monday.

The 36-year-old will be in the stands this weekend as Sheffield United are the visitors. Robinson has been out of work since losing his job at MK Dons earlier this month after a lengthy association with the Dons. He had been linked to several jobs in the time being, but makes a swift return to management at Charlton.

Robinson, who rejected the chance to become manager of Leeds United over the summer, has expressed his delight and happiness at taking on the job at such a fine footballing establishment,

“I am honoured to have been appointed manager of Charlton and can’t wait to get started.

“Joining such a huge club with a large, passionate fanbase is a really exciting proposition.
“I’ve inherited a talented squad and I’ll be doing everything I can to get the club back into the Championship as soon as possible.”
Chief Executive Katrien Meire insists that Robinson was the ‘outstanding candidate’ in what was ultimately quite a popular vacancy. She insists that his overall goal is to provide Championship football,
“Following a thorough appointment process, Karl emerged as the outstanding candidate. He is a very talented, forward-thinking manager and I’m delighted we have been able to bring him to Charlton.
“Our main focus is bringing Championship football back to The Valley at the earliest opportunity. Karl has vast experience of League One and, having on promotion just two seasons ago, we believe he has the necessary credentials and is best equipped to lead the club forward.”
Ironically, his first game in charge will come against his former club in an FA Cup Second Round tie a week on Saturday. Robinson won’t have long until he returns to Stadium MK as well, as Charlton are the visitors on Boxing Day.
