MK Dons open talks with Steven Gerrard

Milton Keynes Dons have opened talks with Steven Gerrard over their vacant manager position according to the MK Citizen.

The Dons have been without a manager since the departure of long-serving Karl Robinson on 23rd October, with Gerrard the latest big name attached to the position.

The former Liverpool and England legend’s contract with MLS side LA Galaxy is expiring and he has publicly announced he will leave the club and return to the UK.

Gerrard has been linked with a number of coaching opportunities around the UK, including positions at Newcastle, Celtic and Liverpool.

But the MK Dons manager’s job is the one bookies expect him to take, with Sky Bet viewing him as the new favourite with odds of 2/7.

Fellow former England midfielder Frank Lampard, who has recently left New York City FC, was considered the favourite but has seen his odds dropped to 8/1.

He is now considered fourth favourite for the job behind Gerrard, Steve Cotterill (5/1) and Ryan Giggs (6/1).

While chairman Pete Winkleman recently revealed that he has not yet interviewed candidates for the job, interim manager Richie Barker is expecting a new manager to be in place by next Tuesday.

“I’ll be taking Saturday – I found that out on Monday or Tuesday. In terms of Chesterfield at home, I believe there’s hope someone will be at least appointed before that game.” he told the Citizen.

The Dons currently find themselves sitting in the League One relegation zone, 21st place, and is in dire need of some changes to help turn things around.

Gerrard has plenty of football experience, but he is yet to take up any coaching role and will be one of the least experienced manager options available to the club.

But the Dons have a history of taking on ex-players and giving them an opportunity, with positive results coming from Paul Ince and Roberto Di Matteo.

So could Gerrard follow suit and take on his first management role with the Dons? Is he the best option for the club?
