Mansfield Town enter talks with controversial manager

Mansfield Town have started talks with Steve Evans according to a report from BBC Radio Nottingham.

With the Stags currently 18th in Sky Bet League One, previous head coach Adam Murray decided to leave the club as he felt it was time for a change and so they are being forced to look for a new boss. And the man they have contacted almost straightaway is Evans.

Evans has been unemployed after being the latest man to receive the axe at Leeds United, though he did well at Elland Road after steering them to a safe mid-table position. He has also had great success at other clubs such as taking Crawley Town into the Football League for the first time but most notably he experienced a double promotion while at Rotherham United which saw them return to the Sky Bet Championship way before anyone expected them to.

For now, U21 head coach Mike Whitlow and youth team manager John Dempster will take temporary charge of the club and with Murray previously being a youth coach before being promoted to the head coach’s job, they will feel that they have a chance to get the job if they impress in this role.

Evans isn’t the only one linked to the job though. Dave Penney, who is currently a coach at Southend United but hasn’t managed since 2011 when he was sacked as head coach of Bristol Rovers is also linked to the role while former Swindon Town boss Mark Cooper and ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones could also be set to take the hot seat.
