Leeds United: comparing the defensive midfielders – a triple headache

As the end of August 2016 approached and Transfer Deadline Day loomed, many Leeds United fans were expecting the club to make a final splurge to add to a threadbare squad. They didn’t.

At least fans weren’t trolled by the club’s own Twitter account this time, promising news if fans stayed up but delivering merely disappointment. This past Transfer Deadline Day, the Whites signed one player in Bournemouth’s defensive midfielder Eunan O’Kane. O’Kane’s signing brought the White’s midfielder total to around 500; well, maybe not 500 but there is a definite abundance of midefield players at the club.

With Garry Monk persisting on playing a ‘Double Six’ formation of 4-2-3-1, utilising two defensive midfield players as a screen in front of the back four. Liam Bridcutt, still out injured with a broken metatarsal, is generally regarded to be Monk’s first choice in that position, but what of the other available position in the defensive midfield?

Eunan O’Kane had been the other first choice alongside Bridcutt, with Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira largely playing supporting roles from the bench. However, O’Kane himself could find himself unavailable for the game against Newcastle after the resumption of the international break, the Ireland player missing the recent Austria game with a groin injury.

Still, when the three of Eunan O’Kane, Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira are fit and raring to go, it does present a welcome, triple-selection headache for Garry Monk and his coaching staff.
