Tom Nichols – fighting against his critics

Since leaving Exeter City to join Peterborough United, striker Tom Nichols hasn’t had the easiest of times.

With each and every miss, the patience of the Peterborough United faithful decreases.

He stole the limelight in Exeter City’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool last season, and attracted the attention of a number of clubs before agreeing to join the Posh.

He struggled under Graham Westley to establish himself in the first team, but has found it somewhat easier under Grant McCann, mainly thanks to an injury to first choice striker Lee Angol.

He scored one goal for the Posh last season following his January move.

Compare that to this season, where he’s scored six goals in all competitions, which makes him joint top goal scorer at the club.

Granted he’s missed a lot of chances, but doesn’t every striker?

He’s only 23, and with the creative talent available at Posh, he’s going to keep getting chances.

Darragh MacAnthony has been full of praise for the performances of Tom Nichols this season, and has vowed that he will continue to improve in a Peterborough United shirt.

Fans had a similar attitude towards Conor Washington during his first few months at the club, and he turned out to be a fantastic goalscorer.

If the supporters get behind Nichols and continue to back him, there’s no reason he can’t do the same.
