Irish striker quits professional football

Peterborough United’s striker Joe Gormley has decided to quit playing football professionally.

In an interview with director of football Barry Fry, it was revealed that Gormley had returned to his native Ireland to be closer to his family, and just play football part time.

Gormley had been on loan to St Johnstone for the past few months, but left the club in recent weeks following his decision.

Barry Fry described Gormley as being “disillusioned with football.”

The Northern Irishman suffered a serious knee injury which kept him out for the whole of last season, before moving north to Scotland this summer.

He moved to Posh in 2015 from Cliftonville, where he broke the record for the number of goals scored by a player in one season, not once but twice.

However he failed to score a goal after his transfer to professional football, and has now made the decision to return to Ireland.

Barry Fry said that Peterborough, St Johnstone and Gormley have all written letters to FIFA, asking for special dispensation to cancel his contract by mutual consent outside the January window.

Gormley failed to live up to the expectations following his move to Posh last year, but that hasn’t stopped Posh fans from wishing him well.
