Swindon Town boss apologises to fans for loss

Swindon Town manager Luke Williams has issued an apology to the club’s travelling fans after The Robins fell to a heavy 4-1 defeat to Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park on Saturday according to the Swindon Advertiser.

The Robins put in a dismal display against the league leaders with the home side going into the half time interval with a four goal lead courtesy for goals from Paddy Madden (two), Duane Holmes and Kevin van Veen.

Nathan Thompson did pull a goal back for Swindon Town in the second half but it was little consolation for The Robins who dropped into the SkyBet League One relegation zone as a result of their hugely disappointing defeat.

After the match, manager Williams was asked by BBC Wiltshire whether the supporters deserved an apology for the club’s heavy defeat.

“I think so, absolutely” The Robins boss admitted.

“They have come a long way to see us and the minimum requirement is that the players really apply themselves and give every single effort.

“When the players are so nervous, they do give the impression that they are not pressing or not trying to make the tackle but it is more to do with the hesitation.

“It is to do with the worry about being picked off or whether you are going to give a free-kick away.

“It gives a terrible impression that the players are not prepared to run and not prepared to tackle.

“It is probably not accurate but either way, it doesn’t make any difference. It is not acceptable.

“These are professional footballers who have to overcome all these things we are talking about.

“For the fans, the bare essentials should be there.”

Swindon Town will now aim to avoid an FA Cup giant killing as they face an extremely tricky First Round tie at National League outfit Eastleigh on Friday evening.
