Who should be the next Wigan Athletic manager?

Gary Caldwell did a lot of good work for Wigan Athletic and did one thing so many managers have struggled with in the past, got a team that was relegated to Sky Bet League One promoted at the first attempt.

But in more proof that football has no sentiment, Caldwell was fired after a poor start to the season which has seen them drop to 23rd in the Sky Bet Championship. Yes he got them promoted and yes he was loved at the club but when it was determined that he wouldn’t be able to keep them in this league, he was gone.

But Wigan must now move on and find the man who will keep them in the Championship? But who? Well you can have your say with our poll after we tell you the men currently linked with the role.

Ryan Giggs

This Manchester United legend may not have any managerial experience, but Giggs is still the favourite to become the head coach. He has been the assistant to David Moyes and Louis van Gaal so he’s been learning from people who have had great success, their reigns at Manchester notwithstanding, and he did do well when he was interim manager of United. But does he have the experience?

Karl Robinson

He has only had one managerial role, but Robinson’s reign at MK Dons is one that should be respected. He turned a non descript side in Sky Bet League One that was hated because of how it was created and turned it into a proper footballing side that managed to get promoted to the Championship despite having a minuscule budget. Could he do well at a bigger club with more money to spend?

Sam Allardyce

Everyone now knows the story of why Allardyce was sacked as England manager and with his reputation in the gutter, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him drop down into the Championship to try and rescue it. He’s had very few bad reigns and usually leaves clubs in a much better place than when he was appointed, though the football isn’t always pretty.

Graham Alexander

Alexander is still really finding his way in the managerial world after being known for making a stunning 837 appearances as a player, but he’s been doing pretty well. He got Fleetwood Town into League One and has been doing very well at Scunthorpe United since his appointment and they now sit at the very top of the table. Could he do the same with Wigan?

Arjan de Zeeuw

Wigan could end up doing the same thing they did when they appointed Gary Caldwell and bring in a legendary defender that is loved at the club. The major obstacle to this would be the fact he has little to no coaching experience as following his retirement, he actually became an investigative detective, which while awesome, it probably won’t help come up with a tactical plan to beat Nottingham Forest.
