Aston Villa are a bigger club than Birmingham, says Steve Bruce

In the build-up to the big second city derby this weekend, Steve Bruce has told the Birmingham Mail that Aston Villa is the biggest club he has managed. In addition to managing the Blues, the 55-year-old has also been in charge of the likes of Sheffield United, Sunderland and Hull City.

Bruce has overseen an unbeaten run since taking over from the sacked Roberto Di Matteo at Villa Park, but faces his biggest challenge so far this weekend when he returns to St Andrews, where he admits he expects to receive a frosty reception.

The former defender, who won three Premier League titles and three FA Cups during his time at Manchester United, revealed that taking Villa back into the Premier League would be his greatest achievement,

“This would be my biggest promotion if I can get it back up and running, this is the biggest challenge and club I have tackled in 20 years of management.

“It’s a tough league, fiercely competitive and physically there is nothing between Championship and Premier League.

“There is plenty of potential here, there are so many good players, but it’s a big club and the expectation has to be dealt with.”

Going into the Sunday lunchtime game, it is Aston Villa who have the better head-to-head record in recent times. The two clubs met in the League Cup last season, which Villa edged 1-0 at Villa Park thanks to a Rudy Gestede goal. Prior to this, the clubs haven’t met since January 2011, which resulted in a 0-0 draw.
