Brighton & Hove Albion centre back Shane Duffy has claimed that Wigan Athletic have ‘the worst fans in England’ and that the atmosphere at the DW Stadium last weekend was like a ‘library’. The former Blackburn Rovers defender made the claims on Twitter after an exchange with a Wigan supporter.
The 24-year-old, who started his 130th league game of his career in their weekend victory over the Latics, and responded to a comment by a Wigan fan who claimed Duffy was ‘an awful footballer’. The Republic of Ireland international certainly pulled no punches when it came to making a response!

The Wigan fan also defined Duffy as ‘the worst defender seen as the DW’. During his time at Blackburn, Duffy clashed with rival Wigan fans during a league encounter. A previous social media ‘incident’ occurred following a 3-0 win that Wigan secured over Blackburn, and in the past, Duffy had gone on record to rile Latics fans by slandering their small fanbase.
Duffy is currently part of a Brighton defence which has kept six clean sheets in their last eight games. An early season buy from Ewood Park, Chris Hughton has certainly made Duffy into a key player at the Amex Stadium. His partnership alongside Lewis Dunk in the Seagulls defence has made them one of the toughest defensive units to break down.
