Barnsley: ex #2 calls in help from LMA and top lawyer

According to The Sun, sacked former Barnsley #2 Tommy Wright has called in outside help in order to help clear his name after being caught up in a Telegraph sting into alleged football corruption.

After being unveiled in The Telegraph’s ‘Football for Sale’ investigative sting, the same one that brought down England manager Sam Allardyce, for allegedly accepting a £5,000 “bung”, Barnsley’s then assistant manager Tommy Wright was sacked by the club.

The Telelgraph said in their article dated September 29 that “Tommy Wright had held three previous meetings with the Far East firm, during which he had accepted a £5,000 cash bribe in return for his help in persuading Barnsley to sign players part-owned by the firm,” the ‘firm’ being the purported Far East company looking to invest in football.

The club statement from Barnsley at the time read in full as:

Barnsley FC today terminated the contract of Assistant Head Coach Tommy Wright with immediate effect.

A meeting between the Club and Mr Wright was held this morning attended by Club Chief Executive Linton Brown. After considering Mr Wright’s response to allegations in today’s Daily Telegraph about breaching FA rules over player transfers, Mr Wright was dismissed.

The Club was unaware of such matters or involved in any wrongdoing. The Club will continue to fully investigate the issues at hand and will co-operate with the regulatory authorities as necessary.

However, according to the online version The Sun the former Barnsley #2 has “called in the League Managers Association and a top lawyer to clear his name,” with the 50-year-old Scot wanting, “a quick return to football.”
