Vurnon Anita happy to be playing right back

Newcastle United’s Vurnon Anita has told the Newcastle Chronicle that he is happy to be playing right back.

The 27-year-old midfielder has mostly played in midfield for the Magpies before this season but recently he has been playing at right back and he he being doing it to great effect so far. His performances have been so good that he has been keeping out DeAndre Yeldin and Jesus Gamez, both signing in the summer purely to play in this position.

And while Anita said he would like to play in midfield again, he also confirmed that he is happy to be playing as a right back at the moment. He believes that his time at this position is teaching him even more about the game and that it is improving him as a player so he can put in great performances whether he plays as a full back or a midfielder.

He said: “I am playing there yes, but I am still a midfielder.”

“I can play in different positions so I am open-minded.”

“At this moment I am enjoying this position and trying to learn everything about it in training.”

“I want to be a better player in this position too.”

“In Holland I also played right-back and left-back with Ajax, and with the national team.”

“I know what to do and what not to do. Now I am playing regularly there I am learning extra things.”

“I will look to adapt that in every game.”

“There is a big squad and it’s competitive.”

“But that can only be good for the team, you can rest players and change them.”
