Northampton Town must keep all 11 players on the pitch

Northampton Town head coach Rob Page has told the Northampton Herald & Post that they will not win games if they continue to get players sent off.

In recent weeks, the Cobblers have really struggled in terms of their discipline and have had a player sent off in each of their last three games. While this didn’t cost them in their match against Scunthorpe United, it did end up contributing to their losses against Bristol Rovers and Millwall.

And the impact of that will be felt in Tuesday night’s match against Peterborough United. Northampton will be without Matt Taylor and Jack McCourt as they prepare for this crucial fixture, leaving the team fairly light in midfield.

And with this in mind, Page has reminded his team they need to be very disciplined if they want to win the game and that his players must not be sent off.

In the pre-match press conference, he said: “Every single player, every single member of staff will understand the importance of the game, but then there’s getting that balance between calm heads – we can’t afford any more indiscipline or sendings-offs.”

“To win the game on Tuesday night, we’ll have to have 11 players on the pitch because we’re up against an attack-minded football team.”

“But we can be aggressive in many other aspects of the game – how we press, how we close down, how we maintain our discipline, be aggressive in that way.”

“It doesn’t mean you’ve got to kick people up in the air to be aggressive, so that message will be loud and clear and if we do that we stand a good chance of winning.”
