Villa owner denies Evans interest

Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia has taken to Twitter to deny reports that the club are interested in signing cleared Chesterfield striker Ched Evans according to the Birmingham Mail.

A story in The Express linked Aston Villa with a move for the 27 year old Welshman after he was cleared of raping a 19 year old woman back in 2011 following a retrial on Friday. Villa’s SkyBet Championship rivals Cardiff City and Premier League strugglers Hull City were also said to be interested in the player.

Evans was signed by Chesterfield in the summer on a one year deal and has gone on to impress at the Proact Stadium bagging four goals for The Spireites in just eight appearances this season. The striker’s good performances have resulted in the player being linked with a move to a higher division club in January however Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia has confirmed that Villa have no interest in signing Evans at the current time.

New Villa manager Steve Bruce has been promised funds to strengthen his struggling side in January in a bid to push the former Premier League club back up the SkyBet Championship table.

Goalscoring remains a problem at Villa Park with Villa scoring just three times in their last five league fixtures while the club have netted two or more goals just twice so far this season.
