Jon Whitney wary of managerless Shrewsbury Town

Walsall head coach Jon Whitney has told the Express & Star that he wary of facing managerless Shrewsbury Town tomorrow.

The Shrews are currently without a manager as their previous head coach Micky Mellon decided to leave the club to take the vacant job at Vanarama National side Tranmere Rovers. And while they continue to look for a new boss, they now have a tough match ahead as they face their West Midlands rivals Walsall at the Banks’ Stadium tomorrow.

Some Walsall fans may be chomping at the bit to face Shrewsbury in their current state, especially as the news they keep hearing is that several big name managers such as Steve Cotterill and Tony Mowbray are not interested in the job, but Whitney is actually wary of facing a team that has everything to prove. He then went on to praise their caretaker manager Danny Coyne and likened them to a wounded animal, making them more dangerous than ever.

He said: “It’s a wounded animal in a way – a dangerous one,”

“Danny Coyne (interim manager) will have them drilled. They have Adam El-Abd who I’ve looked at in the past, Olly Lancashire, Ryan McGivern, AJ Leitch-Smith, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.”

“They are all players who have done well in this league. We have to be wary because there will come a time when it starts to click and I’m sure if Micky had stayed he would have got things right.”

“That’s why it’s important we just concentrate on ourselves. We know if we do our jobs right we are a match for anyone.”

“We have got a really strong squad to pick from. The bench is going to be strong. There is a lot of competition for places.”

“Shrewsbury are in transition and some things haven’t worked for them. Now it’s up to us to exploit that.”
